iWave – Mobile Ad Hoc Networks

The project iWave ("Information Waves on Mass Events"), analyzes how insufficient connectivity of mobile phones duringevents with a huge amount of visitors can be managed. Despite the expansion of the networks of service providers, data networksare often overloaded, especially during mass events. However, it would be of advantage to have a reliable network connection to spreadimportant messages, e.g. safety information.

This problem can be tackled by using mobile ad hoc networks. These so-called MANETs are connections establisheddirectly between individual users. Thus, networks can be spanned without the necessity of infrastructure such as WiFi access points.Since users need to activate their WiFi or Bluetooth connection, incentives to make the users participate in such anetwork are required. Our project deals with these incentive approaches as well as usability aspects.
